In general, it's better for both SEO and user experience, to host your website physically closer to the people that will be using it, ie. your target audience. Website owners often ignore (or don't know this) and opt for the cheapest web hosting package they can find. Bad move! It really does require a bit of thought before jumping in.
Network transfer latency is measured in millisends (thousandths of a second) and has a huge impact on your visitor's experience. You will often see 'ms' referring to milliseconds and your website visitors will surely notice anything slower than 250ms, meaning that the website load may feel sluggish if over 250ms. If a website has a latency of 400ms or above, and has a lot of image content, it's likely the visitor won't hang around on your site for long.
Here are some example latency numerics based on our servers...
Hosting on our servers in Europe allows UK/European website visitors to reach our servers in 0.007-0.020 seconds (7-20ms).
Hosting on our servers on East Coast USA still allows UK/European website visitors to reach our servers in 0.080-0.090 seconds (80-90ms).
Hosting on our servers on West Coast USA allows UK/European website visitors to reach our servers in 0.130-0.150 seconds (130-150ms).
Hosting on our servers on West Coast USA allows Asian website visitors to reach our servers in 0.150-0.180 seconds (150-180ms).
Hosting on our servers in Singapore reaches Thailand 0.045-0.075 seconds (45-75ms), Australia in 0.150-0.180 seconds (150-180ms) and Europe in 0.150-0.180 seconds (150-180ms).
Hosting on our servers in Sydney (Australia) reaches Singapore 0.160-0.190 seconds (160-190ms), USA West Coast in 0.150-0.180 seconds (150-180ms) and Europe in 0.260-0.300 seconds (260-300ms).
Latency will vary between individuals and our servers because of the different ISP's they use, and the network routing that they take. Even VPN's can have both a positive and negative effect due to routing and/or bandwidth of their services.
